Does my house contain asbestos?
If your house was built before 1990 it has an increased risk of containing asbestos material. Although your house can still contain asbestos even if it was built after 1990 even up to 2019! Materials that often contain asbestos include: drywall joint compound, texture coating, vinyl flooring, insulation, and much more. But the only way to know 100% if your house contains asbestos is to have it tested by a qualified and certified person.
What is the testing process like? One of our qualified team will set up a time to come to your house and do a visual inspection. If they see suspect materials that could be containing, they will take small samples (typically the size of a loonie) from the area you are renovating. The number of samples taken depends on the size of the room you want tested and on how many different materials in said room that could be containing. This standard is set by WorkSafeBC. Once all the samples are taken, they are sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Once we’ve received your results from the lab, we will write a hazardous material survey that will make note of the results as well as any other hazardous materials within the scope of the survey. If no asbestos or any other hazardous materials were found, then you are all set to continue your renovation. If these materials are found, no worries! We will stick by your side and remove it all for you. And before you know it, you’ll be back on track.
